Going the extra mile | Valarie, a ParaMed PSW, is passionate about people
With 40 years as a Personal Support Worker (PSW) across a number of provinces under her belt,
Valarie is proud of what she has accomplished and loves her job at ParaMed.“I am passionate about being a PSW and I take it seriously. We are all human beings and helping people is important. It is our job to make sure they are okay – so we always go the extra mile to make sure they are receiving the best care possible.”
Valarie is always educating herself about how she can continue to enhance her care for her clients to help them live better at home, though her philosophy for care has remained steadfast, “I take care of people the same way I would my own parents. We are all human beings, and I treat every single person with respect and dignity.”
She offers this advice to those considering work in home health care, “You have to have a heart and a soul to do this work. You need to care and to be committed to the people that need you. You have to work every day to put a smile on someone’s face – this job is a calling from the heart.”
“My role as a PSW is vital,” says Valarie, “I worked for ParaMed earlier in my career, but due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to relocate to another province. A few years later, I returned to Ontario and was granted the privilege of working for ParaMed again. The process was seamless. It is a great place to work and being back reminded me of the value of what we do every day. I am honoured to support our clients alongside such a dedicated team.”
